Northwestern announced a $20 million, four-year NSF award for DREAM on July 23. The planned remote protein-engineering laboratory would move AI designs through biosafety and biosecurity review, then robotic building and testing. Experimental results would feed model updates. [1]

Laboratory automation already has a substantial infrastructure behind it. NCATS’ undated technical reference describes robotic arms moving plates, software monitoring instruments and a complete process history archived for each screen. Engineers maintain and improve those systems. Automation therefore involves traceable physical procedures as well as a model’s proposed answer. [2]

Its targets—over 300,000 proteins and up to 30 million data points—were projections, not completed experiments. The announcement documented neither successful treatments nor an open public service. [1]
