Historical report — BLS’s September 29, 2026 release estimated 7.1 million nonfarm job openings and 5.2 million hires in August. Openings counted positions on the last business day; hires counted payroll additions throughout the month. Comparing those figures requires keeping their time frames distinct. [1]

An advertisement alone was not the reporting test. BLS’s concepts reference requires a specific position with work available, a possible start within 30 days, and active external recruiting. Its definition spans full-time, part-time and seasonal jobs. A vacancy measure therefore depends on employers’ current hiring conditions, not simply the existence of an online notice. [2]

The figures are survey estimates. BLS’s FAQ describes approximately 21,000 sample units and monthly revisions for additional respondent reports and seasonal factors. Initial estimates can change as returns arrive. The FAQ also describes annual revisions linked to employment benchmarks, so a comparison needs consistent data vintages as well as matching months. [3]

BLS’s household survey defines unemployment through lack of work, availability and active search within four weeks, with a search exception for temporary layoffs awaiting recall. It classifies people; an opening is a position reported by an establishment. A vacancy count alone cannot show jobseekers’ numbers or individual hiring prospects. [4]
