Historical report — FDIC’s May 27, 2026 banking profile reported $80.5 billion net income for the first quarter and return on assets of 1.26%. These were aggregate results for insured commercial banks and savings institutions. [1]

The profile’s return-on-assets ratio relates net income to average consolidated assets and is annualized. Size-normalized profitability and dollar income therefore answer different questions. Neither is a loan-approval measure. [1]

Earlier history complicates another headline number: the bank count. FDIC’s December 2020 study release identified voluntary mergers between unaffiliated institutions as the main reason insured-institution numbers fell in 2012–19. Many community banks were acquired by other community banks. A smaller count therefore does not by itself establish a tally of bank failures. [2]

The community-bank category also has a defined purpose. FDIC’s search page says the definition was created for research and is not intended for other uses. That qualification matters when comparing groups: a research label describes the study population, rather than an individual customer’s service or lending experience. [3]

For a closer comparison, FDIC’s resources page describes BankFind searches by name, certificate number or location, peer comparisons and structural histories. It also identifies state tables and their financial ratios. Those options allow the reporting group and period to remain visible instead of treating one industry-wide profit total as every bank’s result. [4]
