A California project tested shared apartment chargers
A state-funded report describes the project.

A California Energy Commission page updated September 23, 2026, describes a project that installed shared Level 2 electric-vehicle chargers at multifamily properties. The report was written by the project developer, EVmatch, and published by the commission. The commission sponsored the work; the report says the CEC has neither approved nor disapproved it and has not passed judgment on the accuracy or adequacy of its information. [1] [2]
EVmatch reported installing 124 single-port chargers at 21 properties in four California counties between June 2022 and January 2026. Of those, 88 offered shared public and private access and 36 were reserved for residents. The project used reservation and access controls to share chargers rather than assigning every parking space a separate unit. [1]
For December 2024 through November 2025, the report recorded more than 6,200 charging sessions and over 142,000 kilowatt-hours delivered. Not all 124 chargers had operated for that entire measurement period. These are project-reported figures, not a controlled comparison proving that the approach will work equally well at every building. [2]
The study also illustrates why apartment charging can be harder to arrange than charging at a private home: property owners must decide where equipment fits and how access is managed. Residents considering an EV can ask their property manager about charging policies, available spaces and costs. A project with participating properties does not establish that those options are available at every rental building. [3]
