Nevada’s Board of Regents voted 8–5 on January 23, 2026, for additional tuition and registration-fee increases. The minutes, approved May 21, record 3%, 4% and 5% for UNLV, UNR, Nevada State and upper-division community-college courses across 2026–27, 2027–28 and 2028–29. Lower-division community-college courses had 2%, 3% and 4% scheduled. [1]

The financing problem was a recurring payroll obligation facing the end of temporary support. The January briefing said legislative bridge funding covered fiscal years 2026 and 2027, while earlier cost-of-living salary adjustments had left ongoing costs. Administrators presented the additional fees as a way to preserve existing positions and student services, rather than finance an expansion. [2]

Those increases came on top of the inflation adjustments already scheduled under the Higher Education Price Index: 5.2%, 4% and 3.4% over the same academic years. A headline describing only the new three-year package therefore leaves out part of the scheduled price change. The briefing distinguished the additional increase from that existing inflation mechanism. [2]

The disagreement was about who should absorb the shortfall and how universities set priorities. The approved minutes record UNLV’s leadership arguing that expiring support could not be absorbed by an already lean institution. UNLV’s Faculty Senate sought a public analysis of student impacts across income groups and involvement of students, faculty and staff in decisions about cuts. Those are recorded positions, not evidence that either projected outcome has occurred. [1]

For a student estimating a bill now, a per-credit rate is only one component. UNLV’s cashier lists undergraduate courses at $312.75 per credit plus fees, with additional charges for such items as online courses. Residency also changes the calculation: its nonresident undergraduate schedule distinguishes students taking one to six credits from those taking seven or more. [3]

The wider attendance budget is a different figure again. UNLV’s admissions cost guide includes housing, food, books, transportation and personal expenses alongside tuition and fees. Its estimates change with housing arrangements, course load, program and residency; an off-campus budget is not a bill paid entirely to the university. Comparing that total directly with a registration-rate increase would mix different measures. [4]

The October cashier and admissions snapshots are a separate budgeting check, not a reconstruction of every rate increase or a promise of net price. Students need their credit load, residency, program charges and financial-aid offer to estimate their costs. These records do not measure how many people later reduced enrollment or left college because charges rose. [3] [4]
