The Reuters Institute’s January 12, 2026 report put publishers’ expected search-traffic decline at 43% over three years. The question had 268 responses within a strategic survey of 280 digital leaders in 51 countries and territories. The sample was not representative; the figure described expectations, rather than a measured three-year loss. [1]

The chronology matters. Its January 9, 2025 report had described aggregate Google search traffic as stable at that point, while reporting steep earlier declines in Facebook and Twitter referrals. Concern about AI-generated search summaries was already present. Different platforms had different trajectories before the newer forecast was collected. [2]

Chartbeat’s later account separates channel traffic from total activity. It reported average weekly pageviews falling from about 7.64 billion in 2024 to 7.19 billion in 2025, roughly 6%. Google Search pageviews fell 34% between December 2024 and December 2025. A sharp fall in one channel is therefore different from the change in all pageviews. [3]

Google’s AI-search reference places sites appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode within overall Search Console traffic under the Web search type. It separately points to analytics tools for conversions and time spent. Those reporting categories distinguish search visibility and visits from what readers do after arriving; they do not by themselves establish the cause of a traffic decline. [4]
