Historical report — On January 15, 2026, Wikimedia Enterprise first announced Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI and Perplexity as partners. It said relationships had been formalized over the previous year. The announcement date did not mean every agreement was signed that day. [1]
The service’s October 2021 launch described an opt-in product operated by Wikimedia, LLC for high-volume reusers. Smaller users could continue using freely available APIs and data dumps. Paid delivery did not replace those routes. [2]
The operating pressure was visible before January. In October 2025, the Foundation explained that more sophisticated bots could resemble people. Improved detection led it to reclassify March–August traffic. Apparent human pageviews were therefore partly a measurement problem; raw request counts were not a straightforward measure of readers. [3]
By the October 2026 source review, Enterprise documentation described bulk snapshots, retrieval of individual articles and streams of changes. Those delivery choices addressed different update needs. They described access to Wikimedia content, not independent evidence that a customer’s AI answer was accurate. No customer implementation was tested for this report. [4]
