World Press Photo announced its 2026 contest winners on April 9, selecting work from 57,376 photographs submitted by 3,747 photographers in 141 countries. The Photo of the Year announcement was still scheduled for April 23. The contest results and the later headline award were separate stages. Awarded stories included Abdulmonam Eassa’s Sudan coverage for Le Monde and Ethan Swope’s Los Angeles fire work for Associated Press. [1]

That geography reflected a structural change. The organization’s history describes a 2022 shift to a regional model intended to improve global representation, replacing the previous category framework with format-based awards across six regions. Regional juries then fed a global decision rather than every photograph going directly to one panel. [2]

The 2026 judging page describes regional panels of five professionals and a global jury composed of the six regional chairs plus its chair. Photographers’ names stayed withheld; later rounds added captions and information about how projects were made and funded. Staff handled procedure and logistics without voting on merit. [3]

An award also involved checks beyond aesthetic judgment. The verification page required camera-original files from entries advancing to later rounds, comparison by two independent digital analysts, and external checking of captions and circumstances. For readers and working photographers, an image’s provenance, accurate context and disclosure of directed scenes were part of the published process. [4]
