ADA’s web deadlines moved
The extension changed timing, not every accessibility obligation.

DOJ’s April 20 interim final rule moved the web-accessibility compliance date for state and local governments with populations of at least 50,000 to April 26, 2027. Smaller entities and special district governments received April 26, 2028. These replace the earlier 2026 and 2027 dates. The rule took effect immediately; its June 22 comment deadline has passed. It was an enacted extension, not merely a proposal. [1]
The department’s updated fact sheet distinguishes the technical standard from broader rights. WCAG 2.1 Level AA governs covered government web content and apps, including services supplied through contractors. Exceptions do not erase existing duties of effective communication, reasonable modifications and equal participation. A delayed technical deadline therefore should not be read as permission to deny an accessible way to obtain a government service. [2]
DOJ’s planning guide turns that distinction into concrete work: inventory websites, documents, apps and vendor content, identify responsible people, and prioritize fixes. Outsourcing does not transfer the public entity’s responsibility. Its suggested planning steps are guidance, while compliance is mandatory. For a resident facing an inaccessible form, identifying the government responsible for the service is more useful than assuming the web vendor alone must answer. [3]
