Historical report — Firefox 148, first released on February 24, 2026, added an AI Controls section to desktop settings. Its release notes confirmed the delivered change after Mozilla’s earlier announcement. The browser setting gave users a place to manage features, rather than a measure of those features’ accuracy or usefulness. [1]
Mozilla’s February 2 preview described the intended choice: block current and future generative-AI features together, or manage individual tools. Its launch list included translation, PDF-image descriptions, tab grouping, link previews and a sidebar chatbot. The choice spanned several browsing tasks, rather than only a single chatbot provider. [2]
By the October source review, Mozilla’s support page drew a boundary around that control. It excluded traditional machine-learning features and said extensions could still use third-party AI services independently. The switch therefore did not promise to block all AI encountered through websites, search providers or externally powered extensions. [3]
Managed installations added another layer. Mozilla’s Firefox 148 enterprise notes said AI Controls respected enterprise policy and locale or region restrictions. They also distinguished that release from the same-day ESR 140.8.0 update, which did not receive the listed changes. A release number, channel and administrative policy all mattered to interpreting the announcement. [4]
