Google added hundreds of textbooks to Gemini Notebook on October 29 at no charge, naming U.S. and Indian providers including OpenStax and S Chand. Students select Add sources, then Textbooks; Google says answers link back to the selected source. [1]
This catalog differs from purchased-book access. Google’s earlier Expert Intelligence explanation says eligible Play Books titles require ownership, and collaborators in shared notebooks need their own copy. The free textbook announcement does not make every commercial ebook free. [2]
Citations are a checking route, not a substitute for reading. Notebook’s help guide says selecting one opens the quoted material in context; users can also choose which sources inform an answer. That makes the chosen textbook and passage worth checking before using a generated study guide. [3]
Free access also differs from unmetered generation. Google’s August usage update described limits varying with prompt complexity, chat length, source count and chosen features, with five-hour refreshes. It scheduled consumer rollout from September 2; it did not promise identical capacity for every account. [4]
