The National Air and Space Museum outlined its 50th-anniversary plans on January 29, 2026, with a revised reopening timetable. It scheduled five Washington galleries for July 1 and two for the fall. This records that announcement, rather than confirming every reopening. [1]
The museum explained that an earlier plan to open all seven remaining galleries in July had changed after the fall 2025 government shutdown. Its January schedule placed At Home in Space on October 30 and Modern Military Aviation on November 11. Those dates remained future milestones when this retrospective was drafted. [1]
The July group covered flight and the arts, World War II aviation, the universe, life in the space age and hands-on flight science. The announcement identified aircraft, spacecraft and scientific objects for a broader exhibit redesign. [1]
The renovation extended beyond the displays to building systems and exterior cladding. Earlier phases had opened in October 2022 and July 2025. The anniversary marked 50 years since the museum’s July 1, 1976 opening, while its phased schedule showed that the building’s renewal was a separate, continuing project. [1]
