Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 won Best Game at the BAFTA Games Awards on April 17, 2026, but the ceremony’s other decisions tell a broader story about the work behind games. The title also won Debut Game and a leading-performance award for Jennifer English. Dispatch matched its three wins through animation, audio and Jeffrey Wright’s supporting performance. [1]

The results at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall also recognized Blue Prince for game design, No Man’s Sky as an evolving game and Despelote in Game Beyond Entertainment. These are different points of entry for readers looking beyond the top prize: design, sustained development and the use of games to address subjects beyond entertainment can direct attention toward different kinds of work. [1]

The process began with a longlist of 64 games, selected from 255 considered by BAFTA members. For this edition, most eligible releases fell between November 16, 2024, and November 14, 2025. An April 2026 award therefore generally recognized work from the preceding release cycle. Reading the ceremony year as the game’s release year would obscure that distinction. [2]

BAFTA’s longlist notice also explains that the voting was not identical across categories. Games members voted on Best Game and British Game nominations and winners; specialist juries handled the other categories after the longlisting stage. Evolving Game was the exception to the usual release window, allowing older titles with substantial continuing updates. Its recognition speaks to continued work, rather than a newly launched game. [2]

BAFTA had changed the first-round process for 2026 to create more craft chapters. Members with relevant art, audio and performance experience voted in the corresponding categories, replacing votes by the full games membership at that stage. The change put specialist experience earlier in the selection process. It is a specific feature of the 2026 rules, not an assumption that every edition follows the same system. [3]

The academy also asked developers to register games within 30 days of release so members would have time to discover and play them. That lead time shows how access and evaluation precede the televised result. For readers using the awards as a discovery tool, the category and the process behind it are more informative than treating the whole list as one universal ranking. [3]
