Yellow Letters won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 21, 2026. Director İlker Çatak returned to the festival after The Teacher’s Lounge had appeared in its Panorama section in 2023. Jury president Wim Wenders described the new film in terms of a family under political pressure, making the household—not an abstract political argument—the center of the jury’s explanation. [1]
The distributor’s synopsis supplies the mechanism of that pressure. Aziz, an Ankara university professor, receives a letter dismissing him. His wife Derya, an actress at the national theater, is dismissed too. Condemned for their ideas, the couple move into Aziz’s mother’s home in Istanbul. Losing professional standing also changes where they can live and how much independence they retain; the film’s premise makes material insecurity inseparable from its marital conflict. [2]
Their teenage daughter is part of that strain. German Films’ account describes growing distance within the family as the adults confront a choice between their values and their shared future. The fictional family’s changing relationships carry the conflict beyond the initial dismissals: political resolve has consequences that each member must live with. [1]
The production background crosses another set of borders. Unifrance lists the film as a German-French coproduction, primarily in Turkish, with 2025 as its production year. That differs from its 2026 festival milestone. The distinction helps viewers navigating international film catalogues: production country, language, story location and award year describe different aspects of the same work and need not match. [3]
For readers following its later distribution, Haut et Court lists an April 1, 2026 French release and a French-subtitled presentation of Turkish and German dialogue. That entry is useful evidence of a specific market’s release, not a U.S. booking or streaming promise. The Golden Bear identifies the jury’s selection; a viewer still needs a distributor or exhibitor listing to establish where the film can be watched. [2]
