The British Film Institute announced a public sample of its online-video acquisitions on May 15, 2026: fifty works on BFI Replay, alongside creator interviews. More than 400 videos had entered the archive through Our Screen Heritage. The size of the acquired collection and the streaming selection were different measures. [1]
The acquisition program had launched at a February 13, 2025 symposium at BFI Southbank and online. BFI’s account published later that month described online moving image as heavily underrepresented in the national collection. Collecting internet work extended the archive’s remit beyond material originally made for cinema or television. [2]
Preservation and viewing access also have different boundaries. Replay’s undated platform description says its collections combine BFI and regional archive material. It offers home viewing, while thousands of additional videos are restricted to participating libraries for licensing reasons. Finding a title in an archive does not establish that every viewer can stream it from home. [3]
BFI’s licensing service lists footage for commercial projects, exhibitions and creative reuse, along with stills sales and distribution-catalogue licenses. For a filmmaker seeking footage, this is a separate service with its own catalogue and licensing route. [4]
