The 38th Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were presented July 24, 2026, at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Absolute Martian Manhunter won Best Limited Series and a penciller/inker award for Javier Rodriguez, while This Place Kills Me won the teens category and a writing award for Mariko Tamaki. These results separate recognition for a publication from recognition for a person’s work. [1]

Other categories widened the reading list. Black Arms to Hold You Up: A History of Black Resistance won reality-based work, and It Rhymes with Takei won graphic memoir. The awards also recognized early-reader, children’s and teen publications separately. A reader interested in history or a librarian choosing for a particular age group can begin with those distinctions rather than assume the most prominent superhero title represents the entire field. [1]

The 2026 call for entries concerned work distributed in the United States, or first made available online there, during 2025. International material appearing in English in the United States for the first time that year could qualify. That explains why an award carrying the year 2026 may lead readers to a book already available for some time, including a translated work with an earlier life elsewhere. [2]

The call also set limits on reprints while maintaining separate archival and reprint categories. Its stated criterion was overall quality, excluding popularity and sales as selection measures. Those rules keep different publishing activities visible: creating a new book, translating work, restoring older material and designing an edition are not interchangeable accomplishments. They also make an award list different from a bestseller list. [2]

Comic-Con’s FAQ describes a six-person judging panel drawn from different parts of comics, commonly including a creator, retailer, critic, librarian and scholar. The judges choose nominees; voting is then open to specified comics professionals, including creators, publishers, editors, educators, librarians and specialty-store owners and managers. This is an industry process rather than an unrestricted vote by everyone attending the convention. [3]

For someone using the winners as a reading guide, the category definitions are as useful as the trophies. A single issue must be able to stand alone, while continuing series and other formats have different criteria. Checking the exact winning title and category helps distinguish an entry point from a volume that belongs inside a longer run. [3]
