The Recording Academy announced five new categories on June 16 for the 2027 Grammys, alongside changes affecting who can receive an award. Best Latin Song recognizes songwriters of new material, with a requirement that at least 51% of lyrics be Spanish. A separate Asian pop performance category recognizes performers. Those distinctions matter: honoring the person who writes a song and the person who performs it are different acts of recognition. [1]

The Academy also expanded recognition for songwriters and composers of new material on winning albums in most genre album categories, aligning it with recognition already afforded to producers and engineers. The qualification “most” matters; it is not a promise that every contributor on every winning album receives the same award. The announcement directs entrants to the full rulebook for category-specific requirements. [1]

In a separate Academy interview, chief executive Harvey Mason jr. connected the Latin songwriting category to a gap in the existing Latin field. He presented the changes as an effort to give more creators a place in the awards system. That is the institution’s stated goal, rather than evidence that the revisions have already changed who wins or how careers develop. [2]

The interview describes an annual process in which members propose changes and a committee of working creators considers them. Mason also explained Ballot Plus as a way for voters whose verified credits span genres to contribute expertise more widely. These are changes to the awards’ recognition and decision-making machinery, not a public popularity poll. The ceremony for this cycle is scheduled for February 7, 2027; the June announcement should not be mistaken for results. [2]
