Metroid Prime 4’s December launch made the edition choice matter

The adventure reached Switch and Switch 2 on December 4, 2025. Backward compatibility, a paid upgrade and display requirements describe different things.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond launched on December 4, 2025, with a choice that could confuse households moving between Nintendo consoles. The original Switch game is also supported on Switch 2, where Nintendo says its behavior remains consistent with the Switch version. That compatibility listing is separate from the enhanced Switch 2 Edition. Owning newer hardware does not, by itself, turn the original game into the upgraded edition. [1]

The launch announcement placed Samus Aran on the unfamiliar planet Viewros. Nintendo described exploration that combines scanning the environment, acquiring abilities and reaching previously inaccessible areas. A bike called Vi-O-La connects zones through the desert of Sol Valley. Those details explain the game's structure beyond its shooting: understanding the environment and using new tools to move through it are part of the publisher’s stated design. [2]

Nintendo offered a later upgrade path for players who initially bought the Switch game. Its launch notice said owners could purchase an upgrade pack when moving to Switch 2, rather than requiring the enhanced edition at the outset. The notice advertised improvements to resolution, frame rate and loading, plus mouse aiming with a Joy-Con 2. [2]

The enhanced edition’s U.S. specification page explains a trade-off within that upgrade. In television mode, Nintendo lists Quality Mode at 4K and 60 frames per second, and Performance Mode at 1080p and 120 frames per second. Its handheld and tabletop figures differ: 1080p at 60, or 720p at 120. Those modes prioritize different combinations of detail and motion. [3]

Nintendo also states that 4K, HDR and 120-frame-per-second output in television mode require a compatible display. The headline maximum therefore should not be read as a result every television can show. Mouse controls are an option alongside standard button controls. For an existing owner, the useful comparison is the upgrade’s features against the screen and control method they will actually use, rather than the console name alone. [3]

The original game’s product record identifies a single-player title and lists television, tabletop and handheld play. Its Nintendo Switch Online entry concerns cloud saves; it does not establish an online cooperative campaign. Checking those feature fields keeps subscription benefits separate from the core game.
