Jennifer Jimenez of South Miami Senior High School was named the 2026 Music Educator Award recipient on January 29. The Recording Academy and Grammy Museum announced both personal recognition and money for the school program, rather than an award for a hit recording. [1]
The announced package paired a $10,000 honorarium with an equal school grant. Nine other finalists were to receive $1,000 each with matching grants; fifteen remaining semifinalists, $500 with matching school grants. The design directs support to teachers and institutions separately. Announcement of those amounts does not establish when they were paid or how a school spent them. [1]
The release described Jimenez’s nineteenth year leading bands at South Miami and her collaboration with the Greater Miami Youth Symphony on free and reduced-cost programs. These are the organizers’ account of her work. They help explain the educational focus without proving that the award itself expanded access or improved student outcomes. [1]
For teachers considering a later cycle, the museum’s program page sets a narrower eligibility test than simply teaching someone music: current full-time U.S. educators in public or private schools, kindergarten through college. It excludes after-school and private-studio teachers and those retiring at the end of the school year. A nomination is not required to apply. [2]
The page also describes a selection pathway: applications are scored and ranked; quarterfinalists supply material such as video, essays or testimonials; screening reviews precede a committee’s finalist recommendations and trustee approval. Multiple nominations do not improve an applicant’s chances. This is the process described when checked for this retrospective, not a claim that every past cycle used identical rules. [2]
Teachers should consult the current cycle’s requirements. This report did not review Jimenez’s application, school accounts or independent measures of student learning. [2]
