The 2026 NEA Jazz Masters class honored the people who help listeners find jazz

The National Endowment for the Arts announced Carmen Lundy, Airto Moreira, Patrice Rushen and Rhonda Hamilton as its 2026 Jazz Masters on November 21, 2025. Hamilton received the A.B. Spellman fellowship for jazz advocacy. Her inclusion put the work of connecting listeners with music alongside the work of creating and performing it. [1]
The fellowships are once-in-a-lifetime honors for living individuals, based on public nominations, and carry $25,000 awards. They recognize sustained contributions, including advocacy, rather than competition among newly released albums. [1]
Hamilton’s NEA biography traces the mechanisms of that advocacy. She joined WBGO in 1979 and spent four decades hosting programs, interviewing musicians, producing documentaries and presenting events. Her national work included NPR broadcasts, while her later radio career included Sirius and KKJZ in Los Angeles. [2]
The biography also describes how her programming crossed distribution systems and borders. She helped launch jazz programming on Sirius in 2001, with an affiliation that continued through 2021. From 2005 to 2010, she hosted Nissan Murano Crossover Style on Tokyo’s Inter-FM.
