The Academy’s May 1, 2026 announcement put human contributions at the center of writing and acting eligibility for the 99th Oscars. It required feature films’ theatrical qualifying run to begin between January 1 and December 31, 2026. It codified human-authored screenplays and limited acting consideration to legally credited roles demonstrably performed by consenting humans. The rules govern award recognition; they do not settle every question about digital filmmaking. [1] [3]

The distinction between a tool and an achievement predates that announcement. In April 2025, the Academy said generative AI and other digital tools would neither improve nor damage nomination chances by themselves. Branches were to consider the extent of human creative authorship. The complete 99th rules retain that general approach while allowing the Academy to seek more information about AI use and authorship. [2] [3]

The full writing rules make that principle operational. Both screenplay categories require a specific screenwriting credit in the film’s legal billing and a human-authored screenplay; companies cannot be the writing honorees. Entrants must supply the final shooting script as a PDF. The Writers Branch Executive Committee reviews legal credits and resolves eligibility questions. [3]

The acting rules likewise tie consideration to credited, consensual human work and exclude uncredited performances. The Actors Branch Executive Committee resolves eligibility questions. The Academy retains authority to determine award credit and is not bound by private credit agreements. Separately, Rule Two says that when credits are disputed, it may declare an achievement ineligible or withhold an award until the dispute is resolved. It does not take responsibility for resolving the parties’ credit dispute. [3]

For writers, performers and filmmakers, the practical issue is the contribution submitted for recognition and the evidence behind it. Software use alone does not answer whether a screenplay or performance meets the relevant category’s requirements. This is a reading of the published criteria, not a decision about any particular film. [3]

The documents reviewed do not provide an adjudicated example establishing how the Academy would treat a difficult mixture of human and generated work. They identify the decision-makers and materials that can be requested, but consistent application and the treatment of disputed authorship remain questions for actual cases. [3]
