On December 17, 2025, the Academy announced global Oscars rights for YouTube from 2029 through 2033. It promised free live viewing on YouTube and access for U.S. YouTube TV subscribers. The partnership also proposed digital access to selected museum programmes and parts of the Academy Collection; it did not announce digitisation of everything. [1]

The broadcast timetable has a longer history. The Academy’s August 31, 2016 announcement extended ABC’s domestic contract by eight years beyond its former 2020 expiry, through 2028. [2]

The Academy Collection’s search guide, dated July 31, 2025, distinguishes descriptive records from digital previews. It says some holdings are not digitised and some digitised material cannot be viewed online. Searches can find scripts, photographs or posters, as well as umbrella records describing a film. A searchable collection is therefore broader than a streaming library. [3]

The library’s access reference, updated April 1, 2026, describes another route for special collections: an appointment and a materials list submitted at least seven days ahead. It also distinguishes access from publication rights, which researchers may need to obtain elsewhere. These existing arrangements do not establish how the future partnership will change every collection’s availability. [4]
