The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame named its 2026 class on April 13, bringing Sade, Luther Vandross, Wu-Tang Clan and Joy Division/New Order into its performer selections alongside four other acts. The announcement also recognized figures in separate influence, musical-excellence and industry categories. It was a selection milestone ahead of the November 14 ceremony, not a report that the ceremony had already happened. [1]
Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller and Rick Rubin were named for musical excellence; Celia Cruz and Fela Kuti were among the early-influence selections. The categories let the institution recognize work beyond a headline performing act, including songwriting and production. They also explain why reading the class as a list of contemporary rock bands misses part of what the Hall is choosing to commemorate. [1]
The selection process sets a long eligibility clock: an artist’s first commercial release must be at least 25 years old. A nominating committee creates the ballot, and an international body of more than 1,200 artists, historians and industry members votes. The public’s leading choices are aggregated into one fan ballot. A large online fan tally is therefore not equivalent to that number of individual votes in the final professional electorate. [2]
Vandross’ institutional profile supplies a useful example of musical work crossing those categories in practice. Before his solo success, he worked as a backing singer, writer and arranger, including a collaboration on David Bowie’s Young Americans. He later produced for artists including Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Diana Ross. The Hall’s account places those contributions alongside his recordings as a lead singer, showing why a career’s influence cannot be measured only by the front-of-cover credit. [3]
That influence also reached a newer recording. The Hall’s profile notes that Kendrick Lamar’s luther sampled Vandross’ If This World Were Mine and won the 2026 Record of the Year Grammy. Following that sample gives listeners a specific connection between an older catalogue and a contemporary hit, alongside the writing and production work recognized in the broader career account. [3]
