Valve’s 2025 hardware announcement put game compatibility at the center
Steam Machine, Steam Frame and a new controller expanded the hardware plan. The more consequential promise concerned how existing game libraries would work.

Valve announced a new Steam Controller, Steam Machine and Steam Frame on November 12, 2025, with a planned 2026 arrival. For people who already owned PC games, the central question was whether those games would move comfortably to a television or headset. Valve’s developer announcement addressed that issue by extending its Verified program beyond Steam Deck. [1]
At the announcement, Valve said games already verified for Steam Deck would automatically be verified for Steam Machine. Steam Frame involved a separate challenge: supporting games through streaming and standalone operation. Valve opened a developer-kit program with limited supply. A request for a kit was an opportunity for developers to prepare software, not evidence that every existing PC game had been tested on the headset. [1]
Valve’s March 2026 review of the previous year supplied the longer history. It traced its living-room ambitions to 2013 and acknowledged that Linux compatibility and its own hardware experience had limited the earlier effort. The company credited the Proton compatibility layer and lessons from Steam Controller, Steam Link, Index and Steam Deck with changing the conditions for another attempt. [2]
The same March update also described memory and storage shortages as a challenge, while maintaining the plan to ship all three products in 2026. That dated statement should not be mistaken for a current stock or delivery guarantee. It shows why an announcement, a developer program and a product reaching customers need to be tracked as separate milestones. [2]
Valve’s compatibility documentation, checked for this retrospective, gives the badges practical meaning. Verified means the game passes the checks without configuration work to access its functionality. Playable means it works but may require manual steps, such as selecting a controller configuration or opening an on-screen keyboard. Unsupported identifies a compatibility problem; Unknown means the review has not been completed. Unknown is not the same judgment as a failed test. [3]
The checklist examines controls and other aspects of using a game on the target device. A game that starts is not necessarily ready for comfortable controller-based play. For readers assessing their own library, the specific badge and its explanation are more useful than assuming a large catalog guarantees an identical experience everywhere. [3]
