Sundance Institute announced on September 29, 2026, that 19 documentary projects would receive more than $1 million in unrestricted support. Four were in development, 12 in production and three in post-production. The program was founded in 2002. The list included Matrescence from Kathryn Ferguson, whose earlier documentary Nothing Compares premiered at Sundance in 2022. [1]
The support model extends beyond a cheque: the Documentary Film Program describes residential producing and editing workshops, followed by customized creative and strategic support. Its Edit and Story Lab works on story structure and character development with director and editor advisers. Grant recipients are offered further opportunities, while named labs and other initiatives can require separate invitations. [2]
Current fund terms make grants nonrecoupable without encumbering exploitation rights. They require agreements, a clear chain of title, credit acknowledgment and reports. Funding does not guarantee selection for the separately programmed Sundance Film Festival. [3]
The current fund page lists applications as closed and plans to announce its next call in early 2027. Review can take up to eight months; its guidance recommends applying at least that far ahead of picture lock, when the edit is finalized. [3]
