The 2026 Tonys rewarded new work and revivals—with different paths for audiences

Schmigadoon!, Liberation and Ragtime led major categories. A winning title does not necessarily mean its Broadway run is still open.

The 79th Tony Awards took place June 7 at Radio City Music Hall, bringing the Broadway season’s work into a single national ceremony. The show’s official June 4 announcement established that date and venue; the awards site now records the winners. Reading those results is also a chance to distinguish a production’s recognition from its current availability to audiences. [1]

Schmigadoon! won Best Musical and Liberation won Best Play. Ragtime took Best Revival of a Musical, while Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman won Best Revival of a Play. Ragtime’s Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy also won the leading musical-performance awards. Those separate categories recognize both new productions and the work involved in returning established material to the stage. [2]

The Tonys cover a specific part of theater. Their official FAQ says eligible productions open in designated Broadway theaters in Manhattan; Off Broadway and touring productions are excluded. A rotating committee of roughly 50 theater professionals nominates the work, with committee members asked to see every new Broadway show. Voting then draws on designated members of theater-industry organizations. The results are not a comprehensive ranking of live theater across the country. [3]

Liberation illustrates the gap between an award and a booking opportunity. The official Tony production page identifies Bess Wohl as its author and lists its Broadway final performance as February 1, 2026—months before the June ceremony. The play’s story follows a women’s consciousness-raising group in 1970s Ohio and a daughter revisiting her mother’s history. Its Best Play recognition therefore belongs to a completed Broadway engagement, not an implied invitation to buy a ticket for that run today. [4]

Readers using the winners as a starting point for seeing theater should follow the production’s official website or Broadway.org, the ticket-information routes recommended by the awards organization. That check can establish which production is actually selling tickets and where. A revival award, an original Broadway production and a later tour are related pieces of a work’s life, but the award’s eligibility boundary does not make them interchangeable. [3]
