Playbill’s January 27, 2026 announcement described nine shows using At This Playbill for understudies, standbys and alternates. Three had soft-launched it in 2025; January was not its beginning. [1]

The backdrop was the Production Contract ratified by Actors’ Equity members and announced jointly with the Broadway League on October 30, 2025. Running through September 2028, it addressed staffing, scheduling and the health fund, according to the union’s statement. Those priorities are not measured workplace outcomes. [2]

Playbill described two required notices from four options: spoken announcements, paper slips, lobby callboards and cast-page QR codes. Stage managers supply entries, and QR-linked records must remain displayable for 30 days. The service is optional; paper slips remain possible. Entries are printable; Playbill said mid-show substitutions would appear after the performance. [1]

Equity’s January 21, 2026 Swing Day release explains the work behind substitute casting. Swings learn multiple ensemble tracks and may take over with little warning, even mid-show. The union began its annual recognition day in 2016. [3]

As checked October 26, the public landing page listed 18 show links and directed readers to scan a program’s QR code or select a show. That published access route does not establish complete performance records or how audiences used them. [4]
