The National Archives’ June 17 announcement paired free July 4, 2026, programs with longer museum hours around the nation’s 250th anniversary. An outdoor ceremony was scheduled for 10–11 a.m. on Constitution Avenue, with a livestream on the agency’s YouTube and Facebook accounts. [1]

The museum advertised 10 a.m.–10 p.m. opening from June 22 through July 5, except June 23, when the stated hours were 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. The release encouraged timed entry to see the Declaration of Independence and warned visitors to allow extra time for increased security around the National Mall. [1]

An earlier, March 30 announcement outlined Free and Independent: A Celebration of the Declaration, with an opening scheduled for April 25. The exhibition plan described 40 original artifacts from the Archives and other lenders, including a 1763 broadside and Lafayette’s Oath of Allegiance. [2]

The exhibition also planned to trace the Declaration’s preservation and its influence on visual art and music, including material from the 1976 Bicentennial. Visitors were invited to submit photographs of their own Independence Day traditions for display. The announced exhibition run continued through July 5, 2027, with free admission. [2]
