Rock Creek Park’s April 2, 2026 announcement placed poetry among its outdoor and historic settings. For April 18, it scheduled Maggie Dewane’s haiku workshop and reading at Picnic Grove 6, near Joaquin Miller Cabin. The release described a nature-inspired writing activity, rather than a tour inside the building. [1]

That setting carries a history of changing venues. NPS records that a poetry series began inside the cabin in the 1970s, moved outdoors when crowds exceeded its space, then moved to the Nature Center auditorium in 2011. A literary association with a building did not require every gathering to remain inside it. [2]

The broader April observance also leaves room for local formats. The Academy of American Poets inaugurated National Poetry Month in 1996. Its reference says organisations need no permission to participate and offers teachers free lesson plans. Readings and workshops can therefore take different forms under the same annual observance. [3]

The park’s visitor literature supplies an access boundary: visitors can explore the area around Miller Cabin but cannot enter it. The reference separates the building’s surroundings from its interior. For visitors encountering a historic place, an outdoor setting should not be read as an open building. [4]
