Why Elkmont rationed firefly viewing

On April 21, 2026, Great Smoky Mountains National Park scheduled Elkmont’s managed firefly viewing for May 20–27. Its lottery allocated 120 vehicle reservations nightly, each admitting up to seven people. That was a parking allocation, rather than a count of visitors who attended. [1]
The lottery was already part of federal digital trip planning by 2017. In Senate testimony dated September 27, NPS deputy director Lena McDowall described the Smokies event among Recreation.gov offerings, alongside cave tours and snowmobile permits. She presented the service as a central reservation hub as visitors sought easier planning. [2]
NPS says growing crowds prompted access limits. Soil temperatures guide its peak forecast; recorded peaks since 1993 have ranged from the third week of May to the third week of June. Male flashes attract responding females. Heavy rain can halt flashing, and cold can reduce activity. Current park guidance recommends dim red light and designated trails, because bright lights disrupt communication and off-trail walking threatens females. [3]
The retained 2026 booking record listed a $1 application charge and $29 for selected applicants. Reservations could not be transferred or changed, and the winner needed matching photo identification. Arrival after 8:15 p.m. was barred. These expired terms explain the year’s access system; they are not an open application invitation. [4]
