Josh Hoey ran 1 minute, 42.50 seconds for 800 meters at Boston’s New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on January 24, 2026. World Athletics reported that the American had improved Wilson Kipketer’s 1997 short-track world record of 1:42.67 by 0.17 seconds. [1]

His brother Jaxson served as pacemaker, taking the race through 200 meters in 24.81 seconds and 400 in 50.21 before stepping aside. Josh reached 600 meters in 1:16.19 and finished more than two seconds ahead of the field, according to the governing body’s account. [1]

The initial report made the usual qualification that the record required ratification. World Athletics confirmed that ratification on June 1, 2026, listing Hoey’s 1:42.50 as the official men’s 800-meter short-track mark. The later confirmation is separate from the date of the January race. [1] [2]
