NLS honored Georgia and Worcester libraries at the Jefferson Building on July 22. [1]

Georgia’s staff visited all 60 public library systems in the previous year to connect eligible patrons with resources. Worcester added audio wayfinding at its main library and sensory tools across branches. Those examples connect outreach with finding help, and building navigation with using a space. [1]

The national program offers free braille and audio services for qualifying print disabilities. Enrollment requires a certified application and confirmation from a network library; an online form is not instant approval. The NLS application page explains who can certify and how to find the local library, including for people whose disability is temporary. [2]

Digital access adds another step. Once someone is an NLS patron, their network library can activate BARD downloads. Talking-book players and refreshable braille displays can be borrowed, while the free mobile app uses a person’s own device. Check current software requirements with the library rather than assume installing an app completes enrollment. [3]
