The National Endowment for the Arts announced the 2026 Blue Star Museums season on May 13. It offered actively serving military members and their families free admission at participating institutions from May 16 through September 7. The dates defined a summer program, rather than permanent admission terms. [1]

The agency’s FAQ explains the admission mechanism: an eligible military or dependent ID holder may bring up to five family members, and the service member need not be present. Some special or limited-time exhibits may be excluded. Participation and admission procedures can differ, so the offer does not make every museum experience free. [2]

A May 24, 2010 Figge Art Museum announcement documents the program’s early form. More than 600 museums joined a partnership offering active-duty families free admission from Memorial Day through Labor Day that year. That earlier record shows the seasonal, participating-institution model already in place, without measuring how many families used it. [3]

The NEA’s current reference now marks the 2026 season concluded and thanks more than 2,000 participating museums. It explicitly says the map reflects 2026 and directs readers to return in 2027 for the next season’s information. A past participation map establishes neither future availability nor a count of visits. [4]
