On December 20, 2025, 43 staff and volunteers surveyed birds in and around Florida’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Audubon’s January 7 account described 13 teams and 120 species, with routes extending into nearby rural areas and neighborhoods. [1]

Access shaped that record: two locations were unavailable, and organizers linked the lower tally partly to those gaps and fewer American Robins. The summary and body disagree on total bird numbers, leaving that total unresolved. [1]

The larger Christmas Bird Count uses 15-mile-wide circles, local compilers and one-day tallies of birds seen or heard. Volunteers register with the compiler, who submits the data; a casual bird list is not automatically part of the count. [2]

Repeated surveys build a longer record, which Audubon combines with other research to examine population changes. One circle’s seasonal tally cannot alone establish a widespread trend. The December 2025–January 2026 participation window has ended. [2]
