Maryland offered more than 50 First Day Hike options around January 1, 2026, continuing a nationwide annual tradition. The December announcement distinguished ranger-led outings with set times, self-guided routes and AllTrails-guided options; many led hikes required advance registration. [1]
The 2026 directory made access more concrete. Patapsco’s two-mile adaptive outing required registration and listed stroller access, with vehicle fees of $3 for Maryland residents and $5 for others. Bohemia River’s three-mile route was explicitly unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers. The statewide invitation still required reading the individual route. [2]
A January 9 DNR bulletin reported more than 3,000 participants: over 2,000 on ranger-led hikes and more than 1,100 on self-guided outings. These reported participation totals document the season’s reach, while the directory explains the different conditions under which people could join. [3]
