The Library of Congress announced 25 National Film Registry additions on January 29, 2026, bringing the list to 925 films. Although announced in January, this group is the 2025 selections. Registry year and announcement date are different. [1]
The selections spanned more than a century. Six silent films dated from 1896 through 1926, including the 1916 student production Maid of McMillan. The newest addition was Wes Anderson’s 2014 film The Grand Budapest Hotel. The range extends beyond recent commercial films familiar to many viewers. [1]
Four documentaries joined the list, among them Ken Burns’ Brooklyn Bridge and Nancy Buirski’s The Loving Story. Other selections included The Karate Kid, Clueless and Inception, alongside older musicals White Christmas and High Society. The group combines documentary records, popular entertainment and early filmmaking. [1]
The Library said many selected works are in its moving-image holdings, while others are preserved by rights holders or other archives. Inclusion should therefore not be mistaken for a statement that every film is physically held at the Library. The announcement records preservation selections, not a new release of the films. [1]
