Las Vegas announced July 28, 2026 that five more high schools would receive crossing guards at the August 10 school-year start. Bonanza, Centennial, Desert Pines, Shadow Ridge and Western were the named additions. They joined four high schools already in the program: Arbor View, Cimarron-Memorial, Clark and Palo Verde. [1]
The city said elementary and middle schools within its jurisdiction already had guards. With the high-school additions, it listed 92 schools covered, 322 crossing guards and approximately $3.59 million in annual spending. Officials said they would continue evaluating other high schools for guard placement. [1]
Placement criteria included traffic volumes, turning movements, crossing distance, available alternative crossings and visibility. The release linked the expansion to the city’s Vision Zero goal of eliminating roadway deaths and serious injuries by 2050. Its staffing figures described the announced program; the safety goal was a target, rather than a result already achieved. [1]
