On September 15, 2026, FBI Boston said it had returned nine historical objects to USS Massachusetts at Battleship Cove. They included a 1942 daily-planning folder and a First Lieutenant’s Damage Control Book containing engineering and structural specifications. The documents preserve traces of operating the vessel, alongside the ship itself. [1]
The recovery followed a chain of identification. According to the FBI, museum volunteers noticed missing objects in a social-media post, the curator involved Fall River police, and the Bureau worked with its Dallas office to recover and authenticate the material. A recognizable photograph was a lead; authentication remained a separate step. [1]
The museum’s ship history places that return in a longer preservation effort. Massachusetts was launched in September 1941, commissioned the following May, and served in North Africa and the Pacific. After it was removed from the Navy Register in 1962, former crew members campaigned to save it. With fundraising help from Massachusetts schoolchildren, the ship reached Fall River in June 1965 and opened to the public two months later. [2]
The museum’s collecting policy includes equipment, uniforms, photographs and material connected with its vessels, aircraft and people. It describes identifying, cataloguing and conserving items for exhibits and research. Those are different steps: custody does not establish that each returned object has already reached a gallery. [3]
The policy acknowledges limited storage and collection priorities. Whether researchers can consult the recovered paperwork remains a useful question: the sources examined here give no item-level timetable for public access. [3]
