Antonelli wins after Canadian GP turning point
A retirement changed the stopping window.

Kimi Antonelli won the Canadian Grand Prix on May 24, 2026, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. George Russell’s lap-30 power-unit failure brought a virtual safety car. Antonelli joined the pit stops during that interruption and emerged 4.6 seconds ahead of Verstappen. The retirement removed his closest team rival; the stopping window shaped the margin. [1]
Formula 1’s timing glossary defines a delta as a difference between times: negative means faster than the reference, positive slower. Reading those comparisons requires knowing the reference; a gap or target is not itself a diagnosis of car performance. [2]
An earlier Australian Grand Prix shows why that distinction matters. Formula 1’s March 2018 account attributed Mercedes’ mistaken safety margin to an offline tool generating delta times, correcting an initial suspicion about race-strategy software. The team said its assumed cushion had influenced fuel and tyre saving. That historical explanation does not establish a software fault in Canada. [3]
