The NCAA’s May 19 recommendation moved women’s flag football toward a national championship, with spring 2028 projected for the first edition. [1]
January’s emerging-sport designation supplied the starting point. Schools fielding qualifying varsity teams that spring could count toward the 40-school threshold. Club participation alone did not satisfy that varsity requirement. The pathway connected campus investment with national eligibility. [2]
The May timetable called for votes by all three divisions in January 2027, plus approval by financial oversight committees. The recommendation also proposed a dedicated committee. These were steps toward operating a championship, rather than a promise that every school would immediately offer a team. [1]
Daemen’s June 3 announcement illustrates the separate campus decisions. It planned a 2027–28 debut and a coaching search. The school would be the East Coast Conference’s fifth program; six were required for a conference championship. A new team, a conference competition and an NCAA title thus followed different thresholds. [3]
