Magnus Carlsen drew the fourth game to beat Fabiano Caruana 2.5–1.5 in Weissenhaus on February 15, 2026. Carlsen, Caruana and third-placed Nodirbek Abdusattorov secured places for 2027. [1]

First needs qualification. FIDE’s January 7 agreement with a private organiser continued Fischer Random championships held in 2019 and 2022, rather than inventing the format. The published entry route combined six tour places, an organiser nomination and an online qualifier. [2]

The launch rules called for a random starting position each round, excluding the classical setup, with simultaneous games sharing one position. A rapid round-robin cut the field to four; the published semifinal and final format used four-game matches at 25 minutes plus 10 seconds per move. Preparation and advancement differed from a standard-start classical title. [3]
