McKendree finished ahead of Iowa, 171–166, in the team standings at the first NCAA women’s wrestling championship in Coralville, Iowa, on March 7, 2026. McKendree’s national titles in 2020–22 preceded NCAA championship status. [1]
That status followed approval by all three NCAA divisions in January 2025. Wrestling entered the Emerging Sports for Women program in 2020 and passed its 40-school sponsorship threshold in 2022–23. Championship recognition followed institutional requirements, rather than marking the beginning of women’s college competition. [2]
The March 4 guide described a shared Division I, II and III field: six regional tournaments sent their top three finishers at each weight to nationals, producing 18-wrestler brackets. A school could qualify one wrestler per weight. Those rules explain how athletes reached the championship beyond the team rankings. [3]
The NCAA’s account also records a vote for a separate Division III championship beginning in 2028. That remained a future plan in October 2026. [1]
