NCAA’s February 19, 2026 decision made a foot landing fully beyond the center line a fault for the 2026 season. Earlier rules required interference or a safety hazard; coaches gained a center-line challenge. [1] [2]

Replay is optional, and inconclusive video leaves the call standing. A foot still on or above the line is different from one completely beyond it; interference itself cannot be challenged. [2]

That is not a general move toward stricter ball handling. In February 2024, NCAA allowed multiple contacts on a single second-contact attempt played to a teammate, while retaining a fault when it crosses the net. The committee sought more consistent calls and continuing play; these were stated aims, not a 2026 outcome study. [3]
