Biscayne National Park announced on June 25, 2026, that Boca Chita Key’s ornamental lighthouse had reopened to visitors after more than two years closed for repairs and restoration. The National Park Service said the work again allowed visitors to climb the structure, which was built in 1938. [1]

The park linked the restoration to deferred maintenance and damage from hurricanes Irma in 2017 and Ian in 2022. It reported replacing corroded ironwork, including safety railings, repairing masonry, installing windows and doors, and carrying out lead abatement. The account describes work reported by NPS. [1]

Reopening did not make observation-deck access automatic. In its visitor guide, updated September 18, the park said employees may open the deck when they are present. The guide also noted that the island has no drinking water, electricity, sales facilities, sinks or showers. [2]

The island guide tells visitors to take their trash away and describes a half-mile trail starting east of the restrooms and continuing toward the pavilion. It says mosquitoes occur throughout the year and that pets, except service animals, are prohibited on the island and boats in the harbor. [2]
