John Day Fossil Beds’ August 6, 2026 reopening followed reduced fire threats and evacuation levels. NPS reported low-to-moderate fire impacts across about one-third of Painted Hills; Mascall Overlook remained closed because of a county road closure. [1]

These are separate road trips, not neighboring exhibits. NPS’s route guide places Sheep Rock 45 miles from Painted Hills and Clarno another 75 miles from Painted Hills; the visitor center is at Sheep Rock. [2]

NPS said the visitor center and Cant Ranch were not directly affected by the fires. It still warned of extreme fire danger and urged visitors to stay on trails during Painted Hills’ recovery. [1]
