Indiana Dunes’ June 15, 2026 reopening notice covered Mount Baldy’s parking area and beach route after the Army Corps moved roughly 27,000 tons of sand. The summit and dune face remained closed. [1]

NPS’s earlier trail guide explains the underlying problem: harbor structures reduce sand replenishment while wind moves the dune inland. It also describes steep, loose sand on the beach approach and a difficult return climb. [2]

The reopening notice retained slope monitoring and warned of unstable sand and collapse risk. Restoring a route around a moving dune did not establish that the dune itself was safe for unrestricted climbing. [1]
