Mount Rainier National Park announced on February 25, 2026, that no part of the park would require timed-entry reservations that year. NPS said it would manage traffic and parking instead. Removing advance booking did not create additional parking: the notice urged visitors to have another destination ready if their preferred area was full. [1]

The previous approach was narrower than a park-wide ticket. A dated 2025 bulletin required Sunrise Corridor reservations during specified summer hours, while many other areas remained outside the system. NPS credited the 2024 Sunrise pilot with reducing congestion. That earlier assessment and the 2026 policy change are not a measured comparison of their results. [2]

The park’s fees page separates admission from other permissions. A park pass or entrance payment is distinct from campground reservations, wilderness permits and climbing passes. A visitor planning an overnight stay or climb therefore still needs to check the requirements for that activity; the timed-entry announcement did not replace them. [3]

Road access also follows its own timetable. NPS’s October 28 update listed Sunrise and Stevens Canyon roads closed for the season and warned that facilities may close even where roads remain open. These later conditions qualify the summer announcement: travelers should check the dated road report and alerts before choosing an entrance. [4]
