WHO’s January 6 update put the population needing trachoma interventions at 97.1 million as of November 2025, below 100 million for the first time. The SAFE programme combines eyelid surgery, antibiotics, facial cleanliness and environmental improvements. This measures population requiring intervention, rather than confirmed infections or individual cures. Mapping helps determine where those interventions are needed. [1]
The mapping project’s 2015 methods paper explains how that geography is established: household cluster surveys measure childhood inflammation and adult trichiasis, in which eyelashes rub the eye. Adjustments account for age and sex differences among people available for examination. The authors acknowledge that attendance can still bias estimates. These are population estimates with sampling limitations, not an examination of every resident. [2]
WHO’s separate 2016 validation standard requires surveys after interventions and a further two-year surveillance period without mass antibiotic treatment. Formerly endemic districts must meet thresholds for both childhood inflammation and adult trichiasis unknown to the health system. Countries also need a funded system to find and manage new cases. Eliminating trachoma as a public health problem therefore leaves continuing responsibilities for surveillance and eye care. [3]
