USGS’s October 8 report analyzes 44 domestic and small-system wells sampled in California’s western Central Valley in 2023. The samples describe untreated regional groundwater. [1]

Inorganic constituents exceeded public-supply regulatory benchmarks in an estimated 30% of those resources. That is an aquifer-area estimate, not 30% of people. Samples preceded household plumbing or treatment; comparisons with public-system benchmarks do not diagnose an individual household’s exposure. [1]

EPA’s current private-well guidance recommends annual tests for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, dissolved solids and pH. It also directs owners to local health departments about substances common in their groundwater. Regional sampling can inform those questions without replacing a well-specific test. [2]
