A galaxy remains a neutrino candidate
Particles and images answer different questions.

A June 17 study proposed lensed starburst “Shadow Blaster” as a candidate for IceCube’s 2021 neutrino alert. DESI screened 249 galaxies; ALMA resolved its gas-rich core. [1] [2]
A separate January 2026 DESI methods paper explains the follow-up bottleneck: imaging discoveries need spectra for reliable classification. Its spare-fiber program uses capacity left after primary survey targets. Host-galaxy light can contaminate those spectra, so the team fitted galaxy and transient templates together and visually vetted the matches. [3]
Cosmic rays colliding with gas could produce neutrinos. Models predict far below one detection from this galaxy per decade. Population contributions do not confirm this individual association. [2]
